Fraud awareness tips
This is a form of fraud where criminals attempt to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, phone numbers, MoMo PINs, One Time Passwords (OTPs) for malicious reasons, by disguising themselves as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication, sometimes even posing as an MTN member of staff. Never respond to a suspected phishing attempt, and report it immediately to the MTN Call Centre on 215 or Send us a message on our MTN Zambia Facebook page.
What is a Smishing attack?
This is a method of fraud where criminals attempt to gain access to your confidential information. This may be done either by an SMS request for information or by the offer of a new product requiring you to give your Mobile Money (MM) PIN.
How can you suspect a Smishing attack?
Frequently the SMS will indicate that you have:
- Been a victim of fraud and need to access your e-wallet urgently.
- Received money into your e-wallet that needs to be confirmed.
- Done something that will result in your e-wallet being suspended unless you respond.
- Violated terms and conditions and need to enter your MM PIN.
- Received a payment that needs to be confirmed by entering your MM PIN.
Lessons learnt?
In all instances, the fraudster will pretend to be from a legitimate company, even MTN, and would ask you to disclose confidential personal information, e.g. MM PIN, date of birth, full names or ID number. Should you suspect that you are a target for fraud, report it immediately to the MTN Call Centre on 215 or Send us a message on our MTN Zambia Facebook page.
*MTN would never ask for your sensitive and confidential information via SMS
This is phishing, but instead of an SMS, you receive a call where the fraudster will pretend to be from MTN or another reputable company, in order to convince you to reveal confidential personal information such as your MM PIN, date of birth, full names or ID number.
How can you suspect a Vishing attack?
Frequently the caller will communicate that you have:
- Been a victim of fraud and you need to access your e-wallet urgently to update details or security information.
- Received money into your e-wallet that needs to be confirmed or reversed
- Done something that will result in your e-wallet being suspended unless you respond
- Violated terms and conditions and need to enter your MM PIN, a verification code or sharing of a One Time Password (OTP)
- Received a payment that needs to be confirmed by entering your MM PIN, a verification code or an OTP
Should you suspect that you are a target for fraud, report it immediately to the MTN Call Centre on 215 or Send us a message on our MTN Zambia Facebook page.
In this scam, you receive an SMS notifying you that there is money in your e-wallet which may be an overpayment, or a wrong deposit, or a wrong transfer. You are then requested to return the funds into another e-wallet. Be cautious before attempting to return the funds by confirming with MTN MM customer care that there is indeed a refund required and that the money is actually in your e-wallet, and that the funds receipt notification is genuine and from MTN MM. Should you suspect that you are a target for fraud, report it immediately to the MTN Call Centre on 215 or Send us a message on our MTN Zambia Facebook page.
To thwart shoulder surfing, you are advised to shield your phone keypad from view by using your body or cupping your hand to prevent your MM PIN being compromised. Should you suspect that you are a target for fraud, update your MoMo PIN and report it immediately to the MTN Call Centre on 215 or Send us a message on our MTN Zambia Facebook page.
This is a form of fraud where criminals attempt to enable a cash-out by sending you a withdrawal prompt. Safeguard yourself by always verifying the agent sending the prompt, if you did not request for a cash-out/withdrawal, get details of the sender and immediately decline the prompt. Send the details of the prompter to our MTN Zambia Facebook Page or Call 215.
In order to safeguard you, MTN will always send you a prompt to confirm that you have requested for a SIM change. If you receive a prompt but never requested for a change, contact MTN MM customer care immediately on 215, and decline the prompt.
Bank push and pull
You can access wallet to Bank service via the MTN short code *303#.
For you to access the service you need to have a registered MTN Mobile Money Number and a registered Bank account
For wallet to bank transactions, normal bill payment transaction fees apply
Your MTN Mobile Money Account and Your Bank Account will be debited, and you will also receive an SMS notification of the transaction
Yes, if you are a tier 1 customer on MoMo its K10,000 and tier 2 is K20,000
Yes, you can transfer money from Mobile Money to any Bank Account number if it is a valid Account Number
Patumba savings
Patumba is a Mobile-Based Digital Savings/Investment product, this service allows anyone with an active MTN Mobile Money account to invest as low as a K1 into Patumba (Hobbiton Money Market Unit Trust Fund) for a minimum investment period of 93 Days
Anyone with an active MTN Mobile Money Account is eligible to investment into Patumba.

Kasaka savings
KASAKA Savings is a savings account available on MTN Mobile Money provided by Barclays Bank that allows you to save money towards your financial goals. You can deposit money anytime and earn rewards on your savings. Barclays Bank Zambia is a Licensed Financial Services Provider partnering with MTN to bring you KASAKA Savings.
All you will need is a registered MTN Mobile Money account to open a KASAKA Savings account.
No, not at all. You only need an MTN Mobile money account
There are no transaction fees for KASAKA Savings account. Opening and closing accounts, withdrawals and deposits are all FREE of charge. Standard MTN Mobile Money charges apply when you make Cash Outs and peer to peer transactions to and from your MTN Mobile Money account.
After you register for your KASAKA Savings account, you will be able to deposit money. To make a first deposit select the “Add Money” on the KASAKA Savings menu. Select an amount that you would like to save and confirm the deposit. You can make as many additional deposits as you want by selecting the “Save money” option and selecting an amount.
When you make a deposit, the money will be moved from your MTN Mobile Money Account to your KASAKA Savings account. The more savings you have in your account, the bigger your reward will be. Deposits can be made at any time.
The minimum deposit that can be made is ZMW 1. The maximum deposit is dependent on your daily MTN transaction limit. The savings balance is unlimited.
You can make use of the “Balance” option on the Kasaka menu
You can withdraw from your Savings account at any time, but you will not be eligible for a reward for that month if you make a withdrawal. MTN Mobile Money account transaction limits will be applied to your account.
To withdraw from your KASAKA Savings account Dial *303# and select KASAKA Savings, then select the “Withdraw” option. The amount you requested will move from your KASAKA Savings account to your MTN Mobile Money account.
There are no fees charged on withdrawals from your KASAKA Savings account to your MTN Mobile Money account.
A reward is a benefit you receive for saving your money with KASAKA Savings account. You will receive a reward each month if you do not make any withdrawals within the previous month. A reward is added to your savings balance at the end of each reward cycle. Each reward cycle is one month long and starts from the day you open your savings account.
For example, if you open your savings account on the 6th of April your first cycle will run-up to the 6th of May when your first reward will be due to you. The next cycle will be from the 6th of May to the 6th of June and so the reward cycles will continue until you close your account. The reward is paid on the balance from the beginning of the current reward cycle. The reward percentage is 5% per annum. This rate is subject to changes in interest rates.
A withdrawal within a reward cycle will mean that you won’t receive a reward at the end of that cycle. The bigger your savings balance the bigger your reward will be.
Your KASAKA Savings account can be closed at any time. To close your account Dial *303# select KASAKA Savings, then select the “Withdraw” option. Withdraw the full balance of your savings account and the account will automatically close. When you close your account, your savings balance will be deposited into your MTN Mobile Money account. You can open another KASAKA Savings account at any time.

MoMo VISA card
The MTN MoMo is a virtual card available to MTN customers that enables them to perform online transactions with funds from their MTN MoMo wallet. MTN has partnered with Visa to offer this service.
Getting the MTN MoMo Visa Card is very easy. Simply dial *303*7*2# and select option 1 to create an MTN MoMo Visa Card. You will be prompted to enter your MTN MoMo PIN and once you enter your PIN the MTN MoMo Visa Card number along with the CVV numbers and expiry date will be sent to your phone via text.
Each MTN MoMo Visa Card you create will cost you K1.5.
An MTN MoMo Visa Card has a daily maximum transaction value of K 10,000 and is valid for 30 days.
MTN MoMo Visa Card is available to all MTN MoMo customers. Dial *303*7*2# to activate your MTN MoMo account.
With the MTN MoMo Visa Card you can pay for goods and services online. Some of these include online shopping, accommodation, airline travel, eBooks, software and apps. The MTN MoMo Visa Card can be used on any online service that accepts payment through Visa.
You can create as many cards as you want.
Simply dial *303*7*2# and select option 2. You will be prompted to enter your MTN MoMo PIN and thereafter the MTN MoMo Visa Card details will be displayed.
Yes, you can cancel your MTN MoMo Visa Card. Simply dial *303*7*2# and select option 3 to cancel your card. You will be prompted to enter your MTN MoMo PIN to confirm this request.
No, you cannot withdraw cash using the MTN MoMo Visa Card. It can only be used to make online payments.

Kongola Xtracash
It is a service that allows eligible customers to obtain short-term micro-credit loans via the USSD platform from their phones.
No, MTN Kongola Xtracash is not available to all customers, its only available to customers who are regular users of MoMo
A customer can check her/his eligibility by dialing *303# then option 4 to access the MTN Kongola menu then press 2 for Xtracash
MTN Kongola Xtracash is available to MTN customers only:
- SIM must be registered
- Customers must be MTN Mobile Money holders.
When an ineligible customer dials the USSD command to use the MTN Kongola Xtracash service, s/he will receive a message informing them that they are not eligible for the service
Eligible customers can request for Xtracash, by dialling the USSD code *303#, select option 4 (Kongola & Savings ) select option 1 Kongola and then option 2.
The customer can borrow between ZMW 10 and ZMW 5,000 based on what they are eligible to borrow.
The MTN Kongola Xtracash Loan amount would be credited into the customer’s MTN Mobile wallet.
Yes, there is an interest rate that is applicable to the service.
Yes, the MTN Xtracash has a maturity period from 1 day to 30 days.
Customers have to pay up all outstanding balances to be eligible to use the service again.
A customer can borrow Xtracash as many times as possible as long as s/he has no outstanding loan obligations.
Customers are encouraged to make full or partial repayments before maturity to save on fees as interests are calculated daily on the outstanding amount. Customers can make payments through the “Repay Xtracash” menu.

The customer receives a notification when his/her loan is due for repayment.
Kongola Kasaka loans
The fees vary from customer to customer, depending on your MTN Mobile Money usage and KASAKA loan repayment history. The fees will be determined by the loan value and loan term chosen. All fees due will be disclosed during the loan application process.
Loan amounts vary from customer to customer and depend on your MTN Mobile Money and airtime usage. The loan amounts that you qualify for will be disclosed during the loan application process. The loan amounts that are available to you will continue to increase as you pay back each loan on time, every time.
Simply deposit enough money into your MTN Mobile Money wallet before the due date. JUMO will automatically deduct the amount from your wallet on the agreed due date. The loan can be repaid in full at any time by selecting the ‘repay loan’ option in the Mobile Money menu.
To apply, simply dial *303# from your handset and select the ‘lending’ option to register. Follow the on-screen guidance from there.
To check the balance simply dial *303# and select the ‘balance’ option. You will also receive SMS reminders with the outstanding loan amount prior to settlement.
If a customer defaults, extension fees will be added and JUMO will blacklist the account. The customer’s details will also be handed to the Credit Bureau which will impact future loan applications with other credit providers. Legal action will also be considered.

Kazang POS
This service can be accessed from any outlet that accepts payment via Kazang POS machine
You just need an active mobile money number and just ensure that you have enough funds to transact
The service will be free for customers transacting via Kazang POS device
They will have signage indicating that they accept payments via MM. You can also look out for POS device in the outlet
The money will be reversed on the customer’s account
ABSA POS
This service can be accessed from any outlet that accepts payment via ABSA POS machine
You just need an active mobile money number and just ensure that you have enough funds to transact
The service will be free for customers transacting via ABSA POS device
They will have signage indicating that they accept payments via MM. You can also look out for POS device in the outlet
The money will be reversed on the customer’s account
MoMo Pay
It’s a service on Mobile money which allows Merchants to make retail payments via a mobile App.
No, there are no transactional fees.
Existing Mobile money subscribers/merchants.
With the MoMo Pay account you are able to do the following:
- Salary payment
- Airtime stock purchase
- Airtime sale
- Transfer funds to Bank account
- Small Change
- Make assisted payments
Customers can register for MoMo Pay on the USSD menu *303# and following below steps:
- Select option 5 “MoMo Pay”
- Then option 2 “Register”
- Then Enter PIN
